About WillTheySpam.me
What is this?
WillTheySpam.me is a public accountability tool. We sign up to websites and explicitly decline marketing emails. Then we monitor the inbox and report what happens.
Think of it as HaveIBeenPwned for email consent violations.
How it works
- Sign up — We create an account on a website using a unique email address. Marketing consent is declined.
- Monitor — Any emails sent to that address are recorded and counted.
- Report — The email count and activity are shown publicly on this site.
Methodology
Each tracked website has a dedicated email address. We sign up manually and ensure marketing consent is explicitly declined during registration. Any email received after signup is evidence that the company sent email despite our declined consent.
In the current version, all received emails are counted equally. We do not yet distinguish between marketing, transactional, or third-party emails. This means some counted emails may be legitimate transactional messages (e.g., account verification).
